I used to feel like I had lumber piling up inside of me. I would think, and more thoughts would bounce around in my brain. I began to worry about everything. I felt overwhelmed by my own thoughts. No matter what I listened to, my mind wandered and felt like calm life was so far away. I always assumed this was normal because my mind was always racing. Then I learned that you can create space in your mind.
I started practicing little things I could do to clear my head, and it gave me space to breathe again. Life feels lighter when your mind feels light.
Here are 12 simple actions you can take today to declutter your mind and find your calm again.
1. Take Deep Breaths
Your breath is one way you can begin to clear your mind. Deep breathing helps you relax and tells your body that it is okay to calm down. By taking deep, steady breaths, your body begins to release tension. Your nervous system kicks into rest mode, and your thoughts will begin to slow down. Rather than getting caught up in racing thoughts, your breath creates a rhythm that centers you in the present moment.
2. Write Yourself Clear

Writing can also help you feel clear again. When you allow everything to bounce around in your head, you will feel congested. Writing down your thoughts declutters your mind and allows you to feel spacious again. Grab a notebook and jot down whatever is on your mind. You don’t have to write pretty letters. Short words and notes can help you release what is weighing you down.

3. Move Your Body
Movement is another great way to declutter your mind. When you sit too long, your mind begins to wander. But the minute you move, stretch, or walk, you begin to release the tension built up in your body. Your body and mind are connected by movement. When you move, you will feel clearer.
4. Allow Yourself Some Silence
We live in a loud world. The sounds of life buzz around in your brain on overload. Silence is like a reset button for your mind. When you allow yourself a few moments of silence, you will automatically feel calmer. Silence allows you to breathe and relax your mind.
5. Eliminate Distractions
Multitasking and distractions are garbage for your mind. Your mind feels heavy when you jump from task to task or when you allow yourself to get sucked into social media. When you allow yourself to slow down and do one task at a time, you give your mind freedom to think.

6. Sleep When Your Body Needs To
You will never feel clearheaded when your body is exhausted. Naps are not laziness; they are necessary. Sleep allows your mind to recharge and take a break. Even if you take 10-minute breaks in between your workday, you will feel clearer. A well-rested mind does not have to deal with the fog of fatigue.
7. Be Grateful
When your mind feels out of control, oftentimes we spend too much time focusing on things that are sucking our energy. Take the time to be grateful for what you do have. You do not have to write a thank-you journal. Simply wake up each morning and name 5 things that you are grateful for. By focusing on the good things in your life, you replace worry and anxiety.

8. Spend Time Outside

Mother Nature is one of my favorite ways to declutter my mind. Going outside helps me release all of my stress. When you allow nature to seep into your lungs and fill your heart, you will feel at ease. Step outside, go for a walk, and enjoy your outdoor surroundings. Mother Nature has a way of slowing down our thoughts.
9. Simplify Your Surroundings
Decluttering your space also helps declutter your mind. When you allow junk and unnecessary items to build up around you, it’s easy for your mind to feel in disarray. Take time to clean and simplify your home. You will feel more organized on the inside when your outside space is decluttered.
10. Stop Allowing Negativity to Fill Your Mind
The things you allow to enter your mind will impact how you feel mentally and physically. The news these days is depressing. Social media can suck you dry if you allow it to. Stop filling your mind with negativity. Watch the news in moderation, limit your time on social media, and choose what you allow to penetrate your mind.
11. Practice Mindfulness
One of the best ways to clear your mind is by practicing mindfulness. Mindfulness is the practice of being present and aware of your thoughts and feelings without judgment. Instead of running through the events of your day or planning your future, take notice of NOW. Notice your breath, feel your body working as you read these words, and listen to the sounds around you. Mindfulness allows you to reset your mind by being present.
12. Let Go
Sometimes our minds hold on to things that we cannot control. Learn to let go of the things you cannot control. Letting go is not giving up; it’s accepting that there are things you cannot change. Free yourself from the burdens you cannot control and watch how your mind feels when you fill up that space with things you CAN control.
FINAL THOUGHTS
Learning how to declutter your mind allows you space to think. You are not completely clearing your mind of thoughts. You are creating space so that thoughts are not controlling your life. When you practice these 12 tips, you will give yourself the opportunity to feel light, clear, and ready to tackle each day.
