Unlocking your full potential means becoming the best version of yourself. Figuring out how you can accomplish your wildest dreams starts with knowing your strengths and skills. We all have talents that are unique to us. Here are nine steps you can take to help unlock your full potential.
Knowing your strengths isn’t enough. You have to actually believe in yourself if you want to grow. You have to fuel yourself with positive thoughts and the knowledge that you can accomplish whatever you set your mind to. When you believe in yourself, you allow yourself to take risks and chase your dreams.
Have faith that you can be and do whatever you want, and then take action to make those things a reality. You’ll be surprised at what you can accomplish when you just believe.
9 Step-by-Step Guides to Unlock Your Full Potential
Step 1: Figure Out Your Strengths
The first step to figuring out how to unlock your full potential is to know your strengths. You may be surprised by how much you learn about yourself after simply sitting down and thinking about what you’re good at. Jot down some things that you enjoy doing, or maybe write down tasks that you always seem to breeze through.
These are great ways to start thinking about the areas where your strengths lie. But if you want to take it a step further, try completing a strengths finder assessment. There are many out there, but my personal favorites are the CliftonStrengths or the VIA Character Strengths survey.
As you’re working through the assessment, pay close attention to your answers. Make sure you jot down anything that you’re passionate about or excel at.
You can even ask a friend or two to help you out with this step. Send your friends a message and ask them what they think your strengths are. Oftentimes, people think of things that we wouldn’t pick for ourselves, so take their advice into consideration too.

Step 2: Create Goals
The second step to unlock your full potential is to create goals. Think about what you want to accomplish. Do you want to learn a new skill? Maybe you want to start painting, or learn to play the guitar? No matter what your goals are, you should make sure they’re specific.
Don’t say you want to get into better shape. Instead, say that you’ll bike for thirty minutes 5 times a week. By making your goals specific, you know exactly what you’re working towards.
Another thing to consider when making goals is to make sure they’re measurable. How will you know you reached your goal if you can’t keep track of your progress? Let’s go back to the example of wanting to get into shape.
You could set a goal that says you want to bike until you can bike for 30 minutes straight. That way, you can measure your progress by how long you can bike.
Make sure you take time to think about whether your goals are attainable as well. You want to give yourself a chance at reaching your goals. If your goals are too far out of your reach, you won’t be able to achieve them.
Finally, make sure the goals you set for yourself align with your strengths. You’ll have an easier time accomplishing your goals if they involve something that you’re good at.
You should also make sure your goals have a timeframe, and that each goal is important to you. Your goals should be short- and long-term, and each goal should motivate you to take action.

Step 3: Make a Plan

Step three is all about making a plan of attack. You can’t reach your goals if you don’t take the time to break them down into smaller tasks. Sit down and create a list of things that you need to do in order to reach your goal.
Now that you have your list, go ahead and create a timeline. By creating a timeline, you give yourself a map to follow. You can use Google Calendar or a planner to assign each task a due date.
Once you have everything set up, you’ll be able to see how far along you are in reaching your goal. If you get behind, you can adjust your timeline. Having a plan is crucial when learning how to unlock your full potential.
Don’t forget to schedule days to check in with yourself. Mark down on your calendar a day each week that you’ll assess your progress. Holding yourself accountable is key when it comes to taking action towards your goals.

Step 4: Have a Positive Mindset
Step four is all about learning how to use your mind to your advantage. The things you think about affect how you feel and what you do. Learning how to rewire your thoughts is the key to keeping your mind switched on to positivity.
First, you have to notice when you’re thinking a negative thought. Once you’ve noticed the negative thought, challenge it. Is what you’re thinking something you know to be true? Are you assuming something will happen?
By asking yourself these questions, you allow yourself to clear up fear or negative emotions you may be feeling. Now you can learn how to swap out those negative thoughts with positive affirmations.
Take the time to come up with some affirmations that you can say to yourself daily. Maybe you have a habit of telling yourself, “I’m not good enough.” Replace that thought with an affirmation that says:
“I am enough.”
Every time you catch yourself thinking that you’re not good enough, repeat your affirmation. Pretty soon, you’ll believe what you’re telling yourself.
If you want to keep your mind feeling positive, you should hang around happy people. Surround yourself with people who are going to lift you up and encourage you to be your best self.
The more you hear from others that you can accomplish your goals, the more you’ll believe it yourself. Also, make sure you’re feeding your mind positive thoughts. Read a book, listen to a podcast, or watch a video that will inspire you to be great.
Lastly, take time every day to practice gratitude. Sit down and write down five things that you’re thankful for. The more you practice gratitude, the easier it becomes to find things to be grateful for. You’ll start to have a positive mindset without even thinking about it.

Step 5: Never Stop Learning
Learning is such an important part of life. It’s how we grow as people and learn new skills. You can never know everything, so it’s important to continue learning new things as you grow. Never be afraid to ask questions and seek out answers.
There are many ways you can continue to learn. One of the best ways is to go back to school. School isn’t just for children. You can take online classes at your local community college that can be done at your own pace.
Not only will you learn new things by going back to school, but you’ll also meet like-minded people—teachers and students that can help you along your learning journey.
If you don’t have the time to go back to school, you can always learn by teaching yourself. Pick up a book that you’ve been wanting to read, listen to an educational podcast, or watch tutorials on YouTube.
Did you know that you can learn new things on wikiHow? By reading articles like this one, you’re teaching yourself new information that you can use to better your life. Don’t forget that you can also learn from your local library.
Libraries are great because they allow you to explore new topics for free. You’ll be surprised at all of the knowledge that you can obtain by simply visiting your local library.
Lastly, learn from experience. You can learn so much about life by getting out of your comfort zone. Try volunteering at your local soup kitchen, or maybe see what you can learn from participating in group discussions.
You can learn something new from everyone you meet, so try and experience as much as you can.
Step 6: Surround Yourself with Positive People
It’s cliche to say that you are the average of the 5 people you spend the most time with, but it’s true! The people you allow into your life can either help or hurt your progression.
Surrounding yourself with positive people will allow you to think positive thoughts and help you stay focused. Positive people will push you when you want to give up on your goals.
The first thing you should do is make sure you have friends that will lift you up. Seek out friends that have similar goals as you and can encourage you to reach them. Let your positive friends help you become your best self.
Once you’ve done that, you should evaluate the relationships in your life. Think about which people in your life inspire you to be better. Make sure you spend more time with people that have a positive impact on your life.
You should also distance yourself from negative people. Negative people will drain your energy and talk you out of your goals. If someone you know is consistently being negative, spend less time with that person.
Step 7: Don’t Be Afraid of Failure

When most people think about how to better themselves, they think about how they can improve. But what about the times you fail at something? Growing as a person doesn’t always mean you’re going to succeed every time.
You should allow yourself to fail every once in a while. Learn from your mistakes and use them as learning experiences. Every time you fail at something, you learn more about yourself.
Plus, you never know what you’re capable of until you push your limits. Tell yourself that you can conquer the thing you failed at. Ask yourself what you learned from failing and how you can use that to your advantage next time.
Here are a few ways that you can push through failure:
- Allow yourself to grow from your mistakes.
- Reflect every time you fail at something.
- Push yourself to new limits.
Step 8: Practice Self-care
Self-care is so important when learning how to unlock your full potential. You have to make sure you’re putting your best self forward every day. You can’t do that if you aren’t taking care of your body.
The first step to practicing self-care is to exercise. Exercising allows you to keep your body healthy and helps relieve stress. You don’t have to go crazy at the gym. Take a walk around your neighborhood once a day.
Doing something as simple as that can help you on your self-care journey. Make sure you find an activity that you enjoy so that you’ll want to do it.
You should also make sure you’re eating right. Your body needs proper nutrients in order to function. Make sure you’re eating foods that will fuel your body instead of drain it. Eat lots of fruits, veggies, lean
