9 Things to Do Every New Month to Start a New Chapter in Life

I like to think of each new month as its own season. It’s almost like a limbo between days and weeks. Time stretches longer, and everything opens up for new possibilities. Each new month gives me an opportunity to start over again and grow into myself.

I know that every single month feels this way. At least it can if we allow it to. There’s something so optimistic about a new month. You have more days, more opportunities, more choices. Use that energy to pause and reflect on your goals.

You know you start every month with good intentions. You want to do better. To be better. But as the month wears on, you lose your steam.

I’ve been there too. But what if instead of waiting until January to renew that mindset? Every month can be your chance to tap back into that feeling. To realign your actions with your intentions. To refresh your soul. You can tell yourself that it’s not too late. A new month is a new opportunity waiting for you to grab onto.

9 Things to Do Every New Month to Start a New Chapter in Life

1. Set intentions for the month

A new month is the perfect time to pause and set an intention for how you want the month to go. Take a few minutes to think about what you want your month to look and feel like. What do you want to experience? What do you want to accomplish? Write down your intentions and visualize them.

After you know what you want, try to break those intentions down into actionable steps. Try making your intentions as specific as possible. This will help you hold yourself accountable and check in on your progress.

Remember that setting intentions doesn’t mean you have to be perfect. It just means that you’re willing to hold yourself accountable. When you mess up, revisit those intentions and recenter yourself.

2. Declutter your space

Let’s be real. Decluttering your space is the perfect way to welcome new energy into your life. When your home feels clean and organized, you’ll feel more motivated to keep that energy going.

Decluttering can help you feel refreshed and open yourself up to new possibilities. You’ll feel lighter, more productive, and ready to shake things up.

Start by decluttering one room or one area at a time. Sort through your items and ask yourself if they add value or joy to your life. If they don’t, then let them go!

To make things easier, try sorting into categories like Keep, Donate, Recycle, and Trash. It’ll help you clear everything out and allow you to be more intentional about what you allow back into your life.

3. Try a new hobby or activity

Starting something new can be scary, but that’s what makes it thrilling. Life is about comfort, but it’s also about growing and trying new things. Allow yourself to feel curious and excited about this new month.

Think about what you’ve always wanted to try but have never allowed yourself to do. Learn how to paint, start gardening, begin coding, or learn a new instrument! Spend at least 5 minutes a week doing something that excites you.

Not only will you feel happier, but you’ll also build a new skill set.

4. Spend time in nature

When life starts to feel like too much, I like to slow everything down by spending time in nature. Not only is it calming and relaxing, but you also allow yourself to grow spiritually.

Take your dog on a long walk, sit outside and enjoy some fresh air, or plan a weekend trip to your favorite national park. When you’re outside, try practicing mindfulness or meditation. Take in your surroundings and allow Mother Nature to nurture your soul.

5. Start journaling your thoughts and goals

Journaling is such a great way to reflect on your day, process your emotions, and track your progress. All you need is a notebook or a journaling app on your phone.

You can even start a travel journal if you want! Make sure to write down anything that comes to mind. There are no rules when it comes to journaling. You can do it once a day or once a week.

You can start by journaling about what you’re grateful for each day or what you can do to move closer to your goals. You’ll be surprised at how much you learn about yourself through journaling.

6. Reach out to an old friend

Friendships are one of the most important things in life. If you know someone you haven’t spoken to in a while, reach out and reconnect! You never know—they might feel the same way.

You can even reconnect by scheduling monthly lunches or walks together. And if you don’t have any friends that you’ve lost touch with, now is the time to make new ones! Join that club you’ve been interested in or sign up for a class.

You’ll be surprised how many friends you can make by just putting yourself out there.

7. Create a fitness goal for the month

Movement is one of the best ways to care for both your body and mind. Having a fitness goal to work toward will help you stay on track. Rather than saying, “I want to get in shape,” say, “I will walk for 30 minutes today” or “I will go to three workouts this week.”

You can make your goals as specific as you want. I like to use the SMART method when I’m creating goals for myself: Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Relevant, Time-bound.

Pick exercises that you actually enjoy doing. Hate running? Don’t make your exercise running or jogging. Find what you love, whether that’s hiking, dancing, playing a sport, or doing yoga.

Motivation is key when it comes to sticking to your goals. Try finding a workout buddy or a friend that has similar goals as you. Keeping track of your progress will also keep you motivated. Buy yourself a journal to track your progress, use an app, or even a fitness tracker.

Every step you take toward your fitness goal is you starting a healthier chapter.

8. Volunteer or donate

One of the best ways to better your community is to give back. There are so many ways to help others, whether it be by volunteering at your local shelter or mentoring.

Volunteering doesn’t always have to be easy. You learn new skills as you help others. Not to mention, you’ll meet new people and create friendships along the way.

When you help others, you open yourself up to so much gratitude and happiness that will come back to you tenfold.

9. Vision board for the future

Vision boards are a great way to visualize your goals. Vision boards allow you to compile anything that you would want for your future.

Start by writing down areas of your life that you want to improve. For example: career, relationships, spiritual, health, mental health, etc. Next, find images and words that align with your vision. You can either cut these out from magazines or find them online.

After you have collected items that you like, start placing them on your canvas. Voilà! Hang up your vision board someplace you will see it daily. Look at it every chance you get and let it remind you of what you’re working toward.

Conclusion

Each time I take these steps to slow down and check in with myself, I feel rejuvenated. Trying a new hobby, cooking at home, or reaching out to a friend helps me remember that small steps lead to incredible breakthroughs. Journaling my thoughts, setting intentions, and moving my body are just three ways I show myself self-love.

I hope that you found something that resonates with you. Whether you try one of these steps or all of them, you can start a new chapter in your life. We get one life to live, so make sure you’re enjoying the journey.
