Ever feel like you’re just… existing? You wake up, walk around during the day, do your job or schoolwork, and sleep at night without feeling satisfied or fulfilled.
Sometimes you wonder why you’re even doing what you’re doing.
Welcome to life without purpose.
Sure, it seems like only a lucky few people ever figure out their purpose. But here’s the truth: everybody has a purpose. You just have to know how to find yours.
Your purpose is what brings meaning to your life. Not just gives you something to do every day—but allows you to wake up feeling energized and hopeful about the future.
It won’t always be easy to find, or even obvious. But discovering your purpose is one of the best gifts you can give yourself.
In this post, I’ll walk you through five practical ways you can find your life’s purpose.
1. Think About What Matters to You

Before you can know your purpose, you have to understand what matters to you.
Reflect on what causes you to feel passionate emotion: joy, hope, love. Anger, pain, sadness. These can all be clues about what you care about most on a deep level.
Here are some questions to think about:
What are you most passionate about?
What makes you feel alive?
What issues or problems make you want to help?
Sit with these questions for a bit. Don’t force the answers. Chances are your purpose will come to you in parts, not suddenly overnight. But by constantly questioning what you value, you’ll slowly start to recognize your life’s purpose.
Remember: your purpose is not necessarily your job or your “goal” in life. Sometimes, purpose is found in why you do the things you do.

2. Listen to Your Gut
Your purpose may be hiding in plain sight.
Think about the things you enjoy or are good at. You probably do these things every day without even thinking about them.
Here are a few questions to spark your inner detective:
What do I do that others have to ask me to do?
What comes naturally to me?
What do friends and family ask me for help with often?
Perhaps you’re the friend everyone goes to with their problems. Maybe you’re always cooking for others or putting messy situations in order. Your hobbies are more than just hobbies—they show what you enjoy improving in the world.
Your strengths can be major or minor. Perhaps you’re amazing at listening to others, or you have a calming presence. Either way—what you offer the world is important.

3. Look at Your Past Experiences
Sometimes you have to look back in order to move forward.
Your purpose can be revealed through lessons you’ve learned in your past. Ouch, hurts to think about, right? I get it. But you have to ask yourself:
When was I challenged or changed?
What have I done that I regret?
What have I suffered through that made me stronger?
Many people find purpose by helping others going through the pain they once went through. Maybe your purpose is to educate people about your past hardship, or to start a movement about it. Or maybe it’s as simple as living with more intention knowing what you know now.
Either way, painful experiences do not define you—but they can help guide you toward your life’s purpose.
4. Explore and Experience New Things
You’ll never discover your purpose by sitting at home thinking about it.
Explore the world around you! You might not realize what you’re passionate about until you try it. So read that book on quantum physics. Talk to that person who has a completely different story than yours. Volunteer at a place you’ve never wanted to before. Take that class you were curious about.
Try lots of things, and notice how you feel when you do them. You might surprise yourself at what brings you joy.
You won’t know everything you want to try. And that’s okay! Your purpose isn’t going to magically fall from the sky the second you become “ready” for it.
Trust me, I’ve been searching for years—I know how impatient we can all be when we don’t have answers. You have to take action if you want your life to change. Even if you fail at something or it doesn’t pan out—you’ll learn more about what you’re looking for.
Your purpose will likely find you when you’re busy living your life.
5. Take Action Even When You Feel Unclear

A lot of people believe that once they discover their life purpose, they’ll KNOW.
Like some intense wave of energy comes over them and it becomes crystal clear what they were put on this earth to do.
But that’s not usually how life works.
You may feel lost at first. You may doubt that you’ll ever find purpose at all. And that’s okay!
Just continue taking action. Live your life with as much intention and authenticity as you can. Carry out the small things that do bring you peace and fulfillment. And most of all, love yourself through the process.
Your life’s purpose isn’t necessarily something that you FIND.
It’s something that you BUILD by how you choose to live each and every day.

Final Steps
Finding your purpose is a process.
It’s not about having your whole life figured out or rushing to reach some end goal.
It’s about understanding yourself. Learning what you care about. Taking small actions to move toward what sparks you.
Purpose can be small. It doesn’t have to be big. And it sure as hell doesn’t have to please anyone else but you.
Keep looking if you’re lost. You don’t have to have all the answers—just take the first step.
